Solid Hardwood
Traditional 3/4" solid hardwood boards, typically nail-down over wood subfloor. The most durable option — can be sanded and refinished multiple times over decades. Available in a wide range of species, widths, and stain colours.
Engineered Hardwood
A real wood veneer over a plywood core — more dimensionally stable than solid wood. Ideal for basements, concrete subfloors, and radiant heat systems. Can be glued, nailed, or floated depending on the product and subfloor.
Wide Plank & Parquet
Wide plank floors (5" and above) and parquet patterns require specialized installation techniques to account for wood movement. We have experience with both and will ensure a stable, long-lasting result.

The right installation method depends on your flooring type, subfloor material, and the conditions in your home. We assess all of this before recommending an approach — and we never cut corners on the prep work.
Nail Down
The traditional and most secure installation method — each board is fastened to the wood subfloor using a pneumatic flooring nailer. Ideal for solid hardwood and many engineered products installed over plywood. Produces a tight, stable floor with no flex or movement underfoot
Glue Down
Used primarily for engineered hardwood over concrete slabs, heated floors, or where nail-down isn't possible. A premium moisture-control adhesive is spread across the subfloor and boards are pressed firmly into place — creating a flat, solid bond with no hollow spots.

A hardwood floor is only as good as what’s underneath it. We never skip subfloor prep — it’s what separates an installation that lasts decades from one that squeaks, shifts, or fails within years.
Before any board goes down, we inspect, flatten, and prepare the subfloor to manufacturer specifications — checking for moisture, levelling high spots, securing loose areas, and ensuring the substrate is clean and ready.

We'll review the manufacturer's installation guidelines, assess your subfloor, and install to spec. How a Floor Installation Works
From first visit to finished floor — here's what to expect when you hire MKZ for a floor installation.
Site Visit & Assessment
We visit your home, measure the space, assess the subfloor, and discuss flooring options — species, width, colour, and installation method. You get a clear quote with no surprises.
Flooring Acclimatization
Once flooring is delivered, it needs 48–72 hours in your home to adjust to your indoor temperature and humidity. Skipping this causes gaps and buckling — we don't cut this corner.
Subfloor Preparation
We level, clean, and prepare the subfloor to manufacturer specification. Moisture is tested, loose areas secured, and any levelling compound applied and cured before boards go down.
Installation
Boards are installed row by row using nail-down or glue-down method. We work carefully around door frames, vents, transitions, and tight spaces — every detail handled with precision.
Transitions & Trim
Threshold transitions, reducers, T-mouldings, and quarter-round shoe moulding are fitted and finished — ensuring clean edges against walls, cabinets, tile, and other floor surfaces.
Sanding & Finishing
If unfinished boards are installed, we sand the entire floor and apply your choice of stain and water-based finish — 3 coats, buffed between each. Your floor, your colour, your sheen.
Final Inspection
We walk the completed floor with you before we pack up. Any touch-ups done on the spot. You leave with our Caring For It™ aftercare guide to protect your investment.
Timeline
Timeline depends on the size of the area. Most residential rooms are completed in 1–3 days. Larger open-concept spaces or full homes may take longer. We provide a firm timeline at quote stage.

We Work With
We don't limit you to one brand or supplier. These are the species most commonly requested — but if you have something specific in mind, ask us and we'll source it.
Red & White Oak
The most popular choice in the GTA — versatile, durable, and takes stain beautifully. Open grain creates character and texture.
Hard Maple
Dense and light-coloured with a subtle grain. Excellent for contemporary and Scandinavian-inspired interiors.
Hickory
The hardest domestic hardwood — dramatic grain variation and colour contrast. Makes a bold statement in any room.
Walnut
Rich chocolate tones and a smooth, refined grain. A premium choice for living rooms and master bedrooms.
Ash
Similar to oak but with a more pronounced straight grain. Light base colour takes stain predictably and evenly.
Cherry
Warm reddish-brown tones that deepen beautifully over time. A classic choice for traditional and transitional homes.
Engineered Oak
The most versatile engineered option — suitable for basements, concrete, and radiant heat. Wide plank styles are especially popular.

Floor Installation FAQ
No — we can source and supply flooring for you, or install flooring you've already purchased. Both options are available. If you'd like help choosing a product, we're happy to advise based on your subfloor, budget, and design goals.
We install over plywood, OSB, and concrete subfloors. Each requires different preparation — plywood and OSB for nail-down, concrete for glue-down with a moisture barrier. We assess your subfloor during the site visit and include all prep work in the quote.
Engineered hardwood is the recommended choice for basements due to its resistance to moisture and humidity fluctuations. Solid hardwood is not recommended below grade. We'll advise you on the best product choice during your assessment.
For pre-finished floors, you can typically walk on them the same day. For site-finished floors (sanded and coated on-site), allow 24 hours for light foot traffic and 48–72 hours before replacing furniture. Full cure takes 7–14 days.
