Stairs Refinishing
& Renovation
Your staircase is the centrepiece of your home. We sand, stain, and finish every tread and nosing to match your floors — and can upgrade your wooden spindles to modern metal balusters for a completely transformed look.
Everything From Tread to Handrail
A staircase refinish isn't just about sanding treads. We handle every component — from the nosings and risers right up to the handrail and posts — so your stairs look finished and cohesive from every angle.
Treads & Nosings
Every tread is sanded back to bare wood and finished with premium water-based polyurethane. Nosings are shaped and finished to match, giving each step a clean, professional edge.
Risers & Stringers
Where risers and stringers can be sanded, we sand and finish them to match. Where sanding isn't possible due to material or access, we paint them — typically a clean crisp white.
Stain Colour Matching
We match your stair colour to your existing hardwood floors — or go in a completely new direction. Stain samples are tested on your actual wood before we commit to the full job.
Metal Spindle Upgrade
Replace old wooden balusters with modern wrought iron or metal spindles. A single upgrade that completely transforms the look and feel of your staircase.
Posts & Newels
Newel posts and landing posts are sanded and finished as part of the complete package — no mismatched components left behind.
Handrail Finishing
Handrails are sanded smooth and finished to match the treads — creating a seamless, unified look from the first step to the last.
Replace Wooden Spindles
With Modern Metal Balusters
One of the most impactful upgrades we offer — replacing dated wooden spindles with sleek wrought iron or modern metal balusters. The difference is immediate and dramatic.
Combined with freshly stained treads and a painted riser, this upgrade can take a staircase from builder-grade to magazine-worthy without a full renovation.
- Wide range of metal baluster styles — traditional, contemporary, and transitional
- Black, oil-rubbed bronze, satin nickel and more finish options
- Newel posts and handrails replaced or refinished to match
- Stain colour coordinated with your existing hardwood floors
- Clean, professional installation — no gaps, no wobble
💡 Good to Know
In some cases, risers and stringers cannot be sanded due to their material or construction. In these situations we paint them — usually a crisp white — which actually creates a beautiful contrast against the stained treads and is a popular finishing choice.
Beautifully Refinished Staircases Across the GTA
Every staircase is different — curved, straight, spiral, open-riser. We've done them all, in every colour from crisp white-oak to deep espresso. Here's a look at our recent work.

How Long Does It Take?
Stair refinishing takes longer than floor refinishing because of the detailed work involved — every tread, nosing, riser, spindle, and post requires individual attention. Timeline depends on the number of stairs and scope of work.

Common Questions
Stairs Refinishing FAQ
Yes — colour matching is a core part of what we do. We test stain samples on your actual wood before committing to the full job, so you know exactly what you're getting before we start.
It depends on the construction. Where risers can be sanded, we sand and finish them. Where they can't — due to material, glue, or access — we paint them, typically a crisp white which creates a beautiful contrast with the stained treads. We assess this during the quote.
The staircase will be out of use during the work and while coats dry. For multi-storey homes we work strategically to minimize how long access is restricted. We'll discuss the schedule with you beforehand so there are no surprises.
Absolutely — this is one of the most popular upgrades we do. We remove the existing wooden balusters and install modern wrought iron or metal spindles. The transformation is dramatic and adds significant visual impact to any home.
Yes. Curved, straight, L-shaped, U-shaped — we've worked on all configurations. Curved staircases require more time and skill but we have extensive experience with them across the GTA.
